Beyond their traditional role as energy-generating structures, mitochondria function as complex signalling platforms that regulate multiple physiological and pathological processes. Disruption of mitochondrial structure and function, commonly referred to as mitochondrial dysfunction, has been increasingly recognized as a critical contributor to the development and progression of various human diseases, including cancer, neurodegenerative disorders, cardiovascular diseases, metabolic syndromes, and inflammatory conditions.</p> <p>Mitochondrial dysfunction is characterized by impaired oxidative phosphorylation, excessive production of reactive oxygen species, altered mitochondrial dynamics, defective quality control mechanisms, and disturbances in cellular metabolism. These abnormalities can promote cellular damage, inflammation, impaired energy balance, and disease progression.
