Abstract

Yoga has become a global phenomenon, expanding beyond its ancient Indian roots into a diverse and inclusive wellness practice embraced across cultures, lifestyles, and generations. This review examines yoga as a holistic method integrating physical postures (asanas), breath regulation (pranayama), meditation, and ethical practices to promote overall well-being. Growing clinical and experimental evidence suggests that regular yoga practice contributes to improved cardiovascular health, respiratory function, stress reduction, and better management of chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and asthma. Furthermore, yoga's impact on mental health—including the reduction of anxiety, depression, and sleep disorders—underscores its therapeutic value in both preventive and rehabilitative healthcare. By addressing the physical, psychological, and spiritual aspects of health, yoga offers a holistic approach, consistent with the principles of integrative medicine. This article aims to critically evaluate the empirical findings and theoretical perspectives surrounding yoga and, in doing so, shed light on its potential role as a complementary strategy in modern healthcare systems.
