Pharmacognostical, Preliminary Phytochemical and Antimicrobial Analysis of Bauhinia Variegata Linn.
Abstract
Objective: The aim of the present study was to carry out the pharmacognostical, preliminary phytochemical and antimicrobial analysis of Bauhinia variegata linn. Fresh leaves of Bauhinia variegate were procured from a farm of kantian village/Distt Hoshiarpur (Punjab). The plant was identified and authenticated by NISCAIR (National Institute of Science Communication and Information Resources). leaf extracts of Bauhinia vareigata which had documented uses in traditional medicine, were investigated for antimicrobial activity against four bacterial strains, two gram- positive ; Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis. and two gram- negative; Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli and two fungal strains; Aspergillus niger , Candida albicans. The antimicrobial activity was evaluated by measuring inhibition zone diameters in agar well diffusion assay. The significant antibacterial activity of active extract was compared with standard antibiotic Ciprofloxacine and antifungal activity with Standard antibiotic Fluconazole. The antimicrobial activities of the leaves were due to the presence of various secondary metabolites.
